ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is part of the traditional Chinese medicine that has developed over the last 5,000 years. Other components are tuina massage, herbal medicine, cupping and moxibustion.

How it works...

It is the method of using fine needles to stimulate lines of energy known as meridians, running beneath the surface of the skin, bringing about changes in the energy balance of the body, working to restore health. Each meridian is associated with a different organ and an imbalance in the flow of energy or qi (pronounced chee) in any of the meridian/organ systems will lead to disease or illness. There are over 1,000 acupuncture points on the body.

Western medicine and Chinese medicine approach disease in very different ways.

Western Medicine treats illness by isolating the diseased area and giving drug medications to alter and counteract the problem. Two people presenting with the same illness would therefore most likely receive the same/identical treatment.

Chinese medicine treats illness by identifying which parts of the whole person are out of balance and the resulting energy patterns they form. These are referred to as ‘patterns of disharmony’. The diagnosis takes into consideration the age, constitution and a variety of symptoms that would not be considered in a western diagnosis. This would mean that two people presenting with the same western diagnosis would quite likely be diagnosed in Chinese medicine with very different ‘patterns of disharmony’ and therefore receive very different treatments.

Most Frequently Treated Disorders:-

Shoulder/back/hip/knee pain, joints/ligaments strain, stress, IBS, problems with bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, menstrual problems, fertility problems, asthma, insomnia, fatigue/tiredness, headaches, migraines, arthritis, vertigo, skin problems, frequent infections,  sport or work related injuries.
